OUR STORY
Handicrafts in West Bengal trace their roots back to ancient times, with Bengal muslin, terracotta, and kantha embroidery emerging as globally admired crafts under Mughal and colonial patronage. These traditions began as everyday utilitarian art forms but evolved into cultural legacies, supported by zamindars, royal families, and later government cooperatives.
Ancient & Mughal Era
Muslin weaving: Bengal’s muslin, especially from Dhaka, was prized worldwide for its fineness and exported to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Silk weaving: Baluchari sarees from Bishnupur began in the 18th century, often depicting mythological stories in intricate silk threadwork.
Terracotta art: Bankura horses and temple panels reflected Bengal’s clay artistry, dating back centuries.
Kantha embroidery: Originated as a domestic craft where women recycled old cloth into quilts with running stitch patterns, later evolving into decorative textiles.
